PALACE  SCHOOL  SINDICATE  THEATRE

The partnership between the Teatro Praga and the Artery Atelier to rehabilitate the Alarcão Palace space was born in response to the award competition of the Escola das Gaivotas promoted by the Department of Cultural Action of the Lisbon City Hall. The intention to redeem the scale of the palace, removing the compartmentalization of more recent uses, is born with the winning proposal of this contest in 2013.

The project had several versions that opened the discussion about the implementation of a theatrical space inside a palace.

As a result of this process, we have designed a space of creation that drinks from the spatial wealth of the palace discovered and which is articulated in the succession of communicating rooms that allow to accommodate occupations of various scales.

The process included an architectural education service with two classes from the 4th grade of the current Escola das Gaivotas [2013-2014] and the presence at the Open Office – New Public Forum of the Lisbon Architecture Triennial 2014. The rehabilitation work began in October 2014, has been phased and controlled, providing the space with essential technical infrastructures, among which the main room equipped with a theatrical web that allows the presentation of shows.

A space for theatrical experimentation is now open to the public, the use of which will inform the next phase and complete the proposal by enhancing it in the cultural panorama of the city.
