PROJECTO BLACKBOX CLUNL-FCSH
Monday • -
Booking: Free entrance
Presentation of BlackBox’s first research case study: João Fiadeiro and Composition in Real Time. As an Arts&Cognition project, the 5 years long BlackBox Project (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) aims at the analysis of artists’ unique conceptual structures, by crossing the empirical insights of contemporary creators with research theories from Multimodal Communication (Human Interaction, Gesture Studies, Cognitive Science), Performance Studies, and Computer Vision.
Within this context, researchers from the BlackBox Project will present results from their first-year case study. The project’s results up to now have derived from research carried out by the BlackBox team on full-body enactments, turn-taking and decision-making, animated infographic films, motion tracking and point clouds rendering.
The day programme “BlackBox project + I am (not) here” includes a display of some of these results on João Fiadeiro’s solos, as well as the presentation of the choreographer’s performance “I am (not) here”, at 9.30pm.

I AM (NOT) HERE
João Fiadeiro
Performance from “I am here” (2003) by João Fiadeiro, built around the imagery of visual artist Helena Almeida. It premiered on April 26, 2015 at the Colegio das Artes in Coimbra, within the framework of the Curatorial Laboratory of the Master’s Degree in Curatorial Studies for an unconventional space, with no definite front, where the viewer moves and relates to the presentation at his / her own pace. your way.
(…) For those who are interested in matters of the creative process, the works of Fiadeiro and Almeida are compulsory passage (…) Delfim Sardo wrote in the program edited in the premiere of “I am here” in the Cultural Center of Belém. that … both use the body as the only tool we are sure to possess and in both it seems evident the need to construct fictional objects about nature and the process of elaboration of what is presented to us as final work. ” philosopher and performance theorist Boyan Manchev, on the same line as Sardo, wrote that “I am here” was “an excellent example of the rejection of the plasticity of the visible … in search of the irreducible, of what is unsuitable via the spectacular Show.”
“I am (not) here” pursues this quest, elevating it to another power where the original dramaturgical concept of “disappearing in the obvious” expands and gains new readings through what it leaves behind. “I am (not) here” continues beyond the presentation that gives it body. Their absence will remain present in the remains, traces and traces that result from performance.
