To forget Joana Leal’s work would be as dangerous as running with a needle in your hand. Ponto Prévio à Flor is a woman’s unassuming invitation for us to run with her against forgetfulness – on the journey from the entrails to the surface of the skin, from the interior to the capital, from intimacy to community.
Joana Leal is an artisan, seamstress and collector of maps, lace, clocks and boxes of Elvas plums. Her passage through life is haunted by being a woman, as much as by being born in the interior. A mantle of oblivion thus weighs over a work whose brilliance lies in its longevity and detail, but above all in the freedom based on the certainty of one who knows things that few people see. Joana achieves enough alchemy in the lines to overcome the setbacks initially enunciated: even so, the work accumulates the rancour of oblivion and translates the daily life of those who do not know to whom to pass the testimony. PONTO PRÉVIO À FLOR is, therefore, a performative homage, which starts from Joana Leal’s textile art and handicraft, which seeks to give centrality and joviality to a singular work whose risk of extinction is real.
