Curated by Pipi Colonial collective, Efeito-Suruba is a transdisciplinary program (artistic, theoretical and festive) on the promiscuity of media and the media of promiscuity in contemporary culture. The program aims to problematize and celebrate the contamination of media, genres, formats and supports in artistic creation, as well as promiscuity as a sensitive regime and model of knowledge production. Efeito-Suruba seeks to challenge the hierarchy of formats, recognizing epistemic and political validity to various forms of expression and thought production. The History of Art and the multiple artistic expressions are crossed by canonical predispositions that convey diverse inequalities and exclusions of gender, ethnicity and class. On the one hand, the relevance of certain media and media to the detriment of others – one recalls the distinction between fine arts and the decorative arts – transforms the art form and art into political thickness that reproduces a techno-normativity that discriminates and hinders access to artistic production and knowledge. To counteract this techno-normativity (still) in force constitutes a fundamental aim to challenge a verticality of knowledge and of the doing that is wanted horizontally. On the other hand, the ways in which sexuality is thought and represented constrain the historical and social discursive construction, with a canonical artistic masculinity that functions as a structural referent of the way of representing drives and desires. It is no coincidence that sexuality has turned out to be central to feminist and queer artistic production, in a desire to broaden access to sexual and sexual enunciation places. In this program will be updated and activated this genealogy of resistance to canonical and normative in the artistic spectrum. Finally, it is also about thinking and acting in collective, ‘in suruba’, in alliance and solidarity, in dissonance and convergence. Promiscuity is assumed as a model of knowledge production through a cooperative program where knowledge becomes contaminated and unexpected encounters between strange bed fellows constitute epistemic and political power. The presentation of the program coincides with the inauguration of the Sala Rosa, an architectural project of the Artéria workshop, executed with the support of the Lisbon City Council, which marks the end of the deepest interventions in Rua das Gaivotas 6.
