This month, Gaivotas is nesting in Elvas – an essential stop this summer, as we know, for those who want to take part in the bird conference of the year. Electronic Warfare and the Postgraduate Course in Sound Art from UL’s Faculty of Fine Arts are sharing the sound flights they already presented in September 2023, now at the FARRA – Alentejo Networked Art Festival, which opens on 28 June and lights up the summer season with the participation of more than 30 galleries from all over the country.

symbiosis
Synthesisers and voice are used to explore contrasting atmospheres that alternate between the ethereal and the obscure. From noise, to drone, to loops, to the most angelic melodies, it’s a journey between psychedelic and delicate environments, where there is an incessant search for a symbiosis between the voice, the body and the electronic world.

Inês Mendes Leal
Multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Lisbon. Her artistic practice is centred on the action that air has on things, thus exploring how to recreate this dynamic, which occurs outdoors and recreate it in the interior/exhibition space. This exploration is not limited to this movement alone, but extends to the incessant search for a possible image of what, by nature, consists of a non-image.

Blowing Sound (2023)
Through the manipulation of low-frequency oscillations, this work is designed to simulate the movement of the wind, emphasising the similarities between sound and wind – we could only hear sound through the vibration of air. This recreates the wind (outside) in the exhibition space (inside). The installation is activated by the presence of a weather vane, which synchronously chases and complements the wind recreated by the sound composition. The whirlwind emerges as the element that makes this experience not only auditory, but also visually perceptible.

Whirlwind (2023)
Synthesiser loop recreating the sound of the wind. incessant search for a possible image of what, by its very nature, is a non-image.

Guilherme Curado
