“Bâtard Sauvage” or “Wild mongrel” is a choreographic piece that anchors the body in the “inverted world” of colonialism, through the image of the mongrel dog. The solo was particularly inspired by research into the term “mongrel complex”, which was marked in the 1950s, becoming popular since then as a kind of Brazilian psychosocial pejorative description. The imaginary of the Brazilian mongrel evokes not only notions of mestizaje, but also of precariousness, submission and humiliation. More deeply, however, the term finds its roots in the open wounds left by colonial processes, where the process of the other “savage” and underdeveloped occurs radically. The project approaches the body as a geopolitical territory where colonial violences must be recognised and fought, first of all, from inside the bodies. In this sense, the notion of border is closely linked to the notion of interiority.
