The importance of being Agustina Bessa-Luís

Succeeding to “The importance of being António de Macedo”, in which Bonneville pays an homage to the Portuguese film-maker and “The importance of being Simone de Beauvoir”, the artist focuses on another character that has been of paramount influence to him: the Portuguese writer Agustina Bessa-Luís.

After Alkantara and Latoaria, its Rua das Gaivotas 6’s turn to host M̶i̶g̶u̶e̶l̶ Bonneville in residency for his new creation The importance of being Agustina Bessa-Luís, 3rd part of the series of performances “The importance of being –”, in which Bonneville inspires himself in the life and work of artists who have marked his own artistic development.

As Simone de Beauvoir, Bessa-Luís too writes about the female condition in a seriously patriarchal culture, depicting atemporal stories that approach – however differently from de Beauvoir – the pragmatic search for “who we are”.

M̶i̶g̶u̶e̶l̶ Bonneville takes as starting point, the social and cultural condition of Portuguese, seeking for deeper roots of “what is being Portuguese” through Bessa Luís’s characters’ construction, as they seem to be in constant shock with society.

“The importance of being Agustina Bessa-Luís” premieres on January 8, 2016 at Teatro Taborda (Lisbon).
