John Ferguson (James Stwart) é um detective de São Francisco que sofre de acrofobia. A pedido de um velho amigo começa a investigar as actividades da mulher do mesmo, acabando por se tornar obcecado por ela. John segue-a por toda a cidade. Ela demonstra uma estranha atracção por sítios altos, o que o obriga a enfrentar os seus medos.
